Tension gripped commuters along the Aba–Umuahia expressway after a daring kidnap attempt involving two fully loaded Coaster buses was foiled by the bravery of a driver and swift intervention by Nigerian soldiers stationed at the Isialangwa military checkpoint.
According to eyewitness reports, about six armed men posing as passengers boarded the buses at a popular motor park in Aba, only to seize control shortly after departure. The criminals ordered the drivers to divert the vehicles into a bush path, but one of the drivers defied the command, choosing instead to speed off toward the nearest military checkpoint.
Despite being threatened at gunpoint, the courageous driver refused to halt, risking his life and the lives of his passengers. His quick thinking paid off, as he reached the Isialangwa Army checkpoint, where soldiers immediately swung into action.
Within minutes, the military personnel intercepted the attackers, disarmed them, and rescued all passengers unharmed. Firearms and ammunition were recovered at the scene, and the six suspects were taken into custody.
Confirming the incident, Mr. Chukwuma Azode, State President of the Motor Union in Abia State, applauded the driver’s courage and the prompt action of the military. He described the event as “a clear sign that Abia State is no longer a safe haven for criminal elements.”
Mr. Azode further warned:
“Let this serve as a strong message to all criminally minded individuals: Abia is not the place for you. We are working hand in hand with security agencies to protect lives and properties in this state, especially on our roads.”
Passengers have since been reunited with their families, and security around commercial transport hubs has reportedly been intensified.
Authorities have launched further investigations to uncover the full network behind the attempted hijacking, as the state government reiterates its commitment to securing all transport routes in Abia.
