Following the recent re-emergence of fatal criminal activities in parts of Umunneochi, the Abia State Government says it is aware of incidents of armed attacks in the area that have resulted in fatalities and heightening concerns.

Briefing Journalists on rising insecurity in the area on Monday at the Government House in Umuahia, after the weekly Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed that the attacks were carried out by suspected bandits in communities within the Isuochi axis of Umunneochi.

He made it clear that security agencies have been placed on Red alert concerning the situation adding that government has also taken further measures to deal with the ugly development

“There have been some security breaches in the Umunneochi area of the state, which unfortunately led to the loss of lives.

“The government has placed all security agencies on high alert. We are fully activating the state’s security architecture to ensure that peace and safety are restored to the affected communities.”

He reiterated the Otti administration’s firm stance against criminality, assuring residents that no part of Abia would be surrendered to lawless elements.

There have been some security breaches in the Umunneochi area of the state, leading to some fatalities.

“The State security agencies have been put on full alert as the state government would not leave any stone unturned in activating the entire security architecture of the state to address the issue of security breaches.”

The commissioner further reiterated Governor Alex Otti’s vow that no part of the State would be yielded to criminals.

Hanto Daily reports that before the killing of two persons around Umuaku Isuochi on Sunday there had been other incidents, including, the killing of a middle aged lady from Obiagu Lekwesi whose corpse was found after two days of demanding for ransom by the wicked kidnappers said to be armed herdsmen; the inflicting of deep cuts on the body of a motorcyclist now receiving treatment somewhere in a neighbouring State by the same gang among others.

According to reports a serious violent uprising was averted between the Youths of the community where the deceased lady hailed from and those residing at the Umuchieze cattle market which they point at as the abode for the armed kidnappers.

Some Youths and Indigenes of Umuchieze who spoke with Hanto Daily News on the situation had called on the government to critically look into the rise of attacks by those they allegedly called armed herdsmen.

They pointed out that the call has become necessary to reduce tension in the area that had for over one year now experienced peace and extreme reduction of crimes, particularly, kidnapping.
