The Abia State House of Assembly has decried the disheartening degradation of the ecosystem in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, following the spate of erosions ravaging the area.
The observation was made when the Assembly Committee on Environment and Urban Renewal, Chaired by Hon Kalu Mba Nwoke made an On the Spot Assessment visit to multiple erosion sites in Isuikwuato Local Government Area.
Recall that the Member, Isuikwuato State Constituency, Hon Lucky Udoka Nweke Johnson, in a Matter of Urgent Public Importance on the Floor of House hinted on varying degrees of erosion ravaging his Constituency, pleading if nothing is done to ameliorate the situation, the entire Local Government may be cut off from the rest of the State.
Monitored by News Admiral, the House Committee on Environment and Urban Renewal visited each of the erosion sites and urgently called that a State of Emergency be declared because of the impending unpleasant situation, if no urgent intervention is made within the shortest possible time before heavy rains set in.
The Abia Assembly Committee on Environment before the inspection, paid a Courtesy Visit on the Mayor, Isuikwuato Local Government, Air Vice Marshall Chinwendu Onyike RTD, who hinted the negative impact of the devastating situation and prayed the Committee to use it’s good Offices to bring the much desired intervention as needed by the entirety of the Local Government, fearing if nothing urgent is done, the situation might worsen.
Air Vice Marshall Chinwendu Onyike RTD also lauded the proactive disposition of the Members of the Environment Committee who swung into action within a short time.
Among the numerous erosion sites include those of Umuokogbuo- Uporoto-Afonta, Umuokogbuo-Umuobiala,Umudi Amaokwe Amiyi,Umunnekwu Agbo Oguduasa which swept away the entire Central Oguduasa Secondary School, Umudi-Ezebe-Amaokwe Amiyi, Ahaba Ehuma,Eke Amiyi Ahaba, Otamkpa Echiefe, Agbo-Nelu Ahaba and others.
News Admiral gathered some areas have practically been cut off the rest of Isuikwuato and that the Local Government Authorities cannot carry the responsibility alone following it’s humongous nature.
