The Abia State House of Assembly has resolved to invite the Commissioner of Police and heads of security agencies in Abia State for an interface to fashion out modalities to fostering mutual understanding between them and the civilian population targeted at ensuring harmony and coexistence.
The above is following a Matter of Urgent Public Importance as presented by Hon Stephen Akachukwu Ucheonye, Member, Aba Central State Constituency, following the murder of one Emmanuel Okocha by a trigger happy Police officer for his refusal to be extorted.
The House further resolved that the Attorney General of Abia State urgently follow up the incident to ensure the culprit is prosecuted and giving the family of the slain the much anticipated justice and further beseeched Governor Alex Otti to show his usual empathy to the family of the deceased.
In their contributions, Hon Lewis Obianyi of Ukwa East State Constituency informed that South East Nigeria is under visible and unhindered intimidation by the Police and other security outfits, following uncivilized disposition of most of their personnel, which is not same in other sections of Nigeria while Hon Nnamdi Chimdi Ibekwe of Bende North State Constituency called for a deviation from what he described as mercantilist policing to intelligence policing, calling for a dismantling of the over 80 check points scattered all over the Aba Metropolis.
News Admiral gathered that the extra judicial killing of Emmanuel Okocha was similar to that of Nkemjika Nwogu which occured on the 15th of February 2024, in cold blood by a Naval Officer also for refusing to be extorted.
Hon Stephen Ucheonye prayed a Judicial Panel of Inquiry by set up to nip such occurrence in the bud and the killer cop prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to other unprofessional officers.
