Abia Deputy Speaker Presents Motion on Release of IPOB Leader
The Deputy Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Augustine Okezie on Wednesday during plenary called for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu through the provisions of H A M 26.
Rt. Hon. Okezie, who stated this while presenting a motion tagged, “Motion On The Need For The Release Of Nnamdi Kanu In Order To Foster Lasting Peace In South East, Nigeria”, added that peace and normalcy will be restored in the South-East if the IPOB leader is released.
Read details of motion below…*MOTION ON THE NEED FOR THE RELEASE OF NNAMDI KANU IN ORDER TO FOSTER LASTING PEACE IN SOUTH EAST, NIGERIA.*
*Whereas* , there is need for Abia State House of Assembly to lend her voice on the clarion call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu;
*Whereas* , it is worrisome to note that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu has engendered rancour, acrimony, loss of lives and property and crisis in the South East Region instead of forestalling peace;
*Whereas* , in the recent past there is a clarion call by the South East Governors’ Forum, Distinguished Members of the National Assembly from the South East Extraction, Ọhanaeze Ndị Igbo and other well meaning Nigerians for the intervention of the President of Nigeria in the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu since the happenings and security situation in the South East have subjugated and defeated the intention of peace and unity anticipated by his continued detention;/
*Whereas*, the clarion call is necessitated by the fact that the aim of government is the protection of lives and property;
*Whereas*, the need for the Abia House to join in this call is of paramount importance as we cannot keep our arms crossed and watch as the security situation in the South East keeps deteriorating by the day;
*Whereas*, it is a matter of necessity that the House do join other respectable and distinguished Nigerians to urge the President of Nigeria to take necessary steps to protect the lives and property of the citizens by calling on the Attorney General of the Federation to invoke the provisions of Chapter 6, Part 1, Section 174, Sub-section 1(c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) to release Nnamdi Kanu;
*And whereas* , it could be recalled that on the 29th of May, 2024 the afore mentioned provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was invoked for the release of the President of Miyetti Allah in order to bring lasting peace in some parts of the North; one wonders why this same provision cannot be invoked for Nnamdi Kanu’s release in order to bring lasting peace in the South East.
I, therefore, pray this Honorable House to resolve as follows:
1. That the Abia State House of Assembly do join the South East Governors’ Forum, Distinguished Members of the National Assembly from the South East Extraction, Ọhanaeze Ndị Igbo and other well meaning Nigerians to give solidarity support towards the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
2. That the House do lend it’s unalloyed support to the resolution reached at the meeting of the Stakeholders/South East Governors’ Forum held at Enugu on the 2nd of July, 2024.
3. That the House do support the visit of the Distinguished Senators of the South East extraction to the Honorable Attorney General of the Federation on this matter.
4. That the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, be urged to invoke the provisions of chapter 6, part 1, section 174, subsection 1(c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) by authorizing the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to foster peace and security as well as restore economic activities fully in the South East.
