Akwa United suffered a second successive defeat in the space of four days after losing 1-0 to Enyimba in a rescheduled matchday 3 fixture in Aba on Wednesday
A second half goal by substitute Austin Onyamachi earned the home team all three points and condemned the Promise Keepers to their second defeat of the season.
Akwa United began the season with a goalless draw in Lafia against Lobi Stars before being held at home to a 1-1 draw by Abia Warriors on matchday 2. They lost on Saturday to Sunshine Stars 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium and are currently on two points from four matches.
Coach Baba Ganaru’s team put up a good fight in Aba against the people’s Elephant and created some good goal scoring chances but couldn’t convert their many opportunities to goals.
In a post-match interview assistant coach Abasiakan Windy said the team’s early struggle this season is a temporary setback but assured that the team will get into steam soon enough.
“We came to Aba to fight for maximum points, but the end result is not what we expected. We knew it was going to be a tough match and we prepared well for it. Despite the fact that we didn’t get the result we wanted, I must commend my players for putting up a good fight.
“Don’t forget, the league is a marathon and what we are passing through at the moment is just a temporary setback and it’s even better that it’s happening now and that will give us ample time to adjust. We strongly believe that we will come out of this struggle soon enough.”
Akwa United will next make a short trip to Port Harcourt to face Rivers United on matchday 5 this weekend.
