Bulletine Construction Company Nigeria Ltd: A True Definition of Community Friendly Company

By Ubong Creativity David

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business model that helps a company be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public. CSR practices are an excellent way to demonstrate your organization’s stance on the economy, environment, and society at large. Companies that embrace Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can drive meaningful change across people and society at large.

When done right, CSR has far-reaching impact: from addressing community concerns to tackling environmental issues. It builds customer trust, raises awareness, and inspires social change. By practicing corporate social responsibility, companies can be conscious of the kind of impact they have on all aspects of society.

While many organizations are compelled to carry out their Corporate Social Responsibility in the area of their operation, others carried it seamlessly with a badge of honour on their shoulders. The later is the case with Bullentine Construction Company Nigeria Limited, an indigenous construction firm owned by a Lebanese, Chief Faysal Harb.

My first encounter with Bullentine Construction Company Nigeria Limited was when they were handling the collapsed Mkpók Road in Eket local government area of Akwa Ibom State. As someone that developed deep interest in development journalism, a colleague and I visited the project site to assess the level and quality of work done by the company after the contract for rehabilitation of the collapsed road was awarded to them. Initially, I wasn’t much impressed with the finishing of that project and in my personal assessment, I scored them below average. That happened few months to the end of immediate past administration of Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

Few months later, after Governor Umo Eno was inaugurated into office, Afia Nsit Road was totally damaged by gully erosion which attracted the attention of the Governor who came personally to award contract for the construction of the drainage system and rehabilitation of the collapsed road. When I visited the site during the flagoff of the contract, I was miffed seeing Bullentine Construction Company equipment at the site as the contractor. In my mind, considering the level of damage that was done to the road by gully erosion and the kind of drainage system that was needed to control the volume of water that passed that route on rainy days, I wasn’t convinced Bullentine Construction Company Nigeria Limited has the capacity to deliver the job judging from the Mkpók Road assessment.

Whenever I visited the project site and looked at the impact of the damage done to the road, within me I concluded that the project was awarded to the wrong contractor. My thinking was that the project should have been given to contractor like CCECC and a long bridge be constructed from Edidem house to Jehovah Witness entrance, but my expectation was dashed.

After full commencement of work, I made it a policy to visit the site everyday to see how the company will handle the project and deliver within the timeframe given by the Governor. Few days later, the company was able to convince me that they have the capacity, expertise and experience to handle that magnitude of project. I observed that the quality of rods they used were very big ones, which I’ve not seen such rods being used by many construction companies in the state except when Julius Berger were building Godswill Akpabio International Stadium and the construction of Eket Stadium by Akwa Ibom State Government. I was impressed to observe that they were using 16mm for the drainage while more bigger rods for the culvert. The more I visited the site, the more I was convinced that the company has the wherewithal to deliver the job in line with the design and specification.

Since then, I find pleasure to visit different project sites of Bullentine Construction Company Nigeria Limited. From the Ibom Park along Brooks Street in Uyo to the just commissioned 9.76Km Ikot Eyo-Edem Idim Okpot-Mbiekene-Nung Obong-Ikot Ntung-East West Road. From my assessment, the company is delivering quality jobs and their jobs are time-bound. That is more reason they are given more contracts in the state. If you visit any of the site, testimonies abound by both workers and community people. They all spoke in unison that Bullentine Construction Company Nigeria Limited is a reliable company and they are delivering quality services across the state. The numerous testimonies have further justified the reason the company was conferred as the Best Intervention Company in Akwa Ibom State by Coalition of Online Publishers, Bloggers and Social Media Influencers, COPBSMI during the maiden Ibom Social Media Day.

Watching live streaming of yesterday commissioning of 9.76Km Ikot Eyo-Edem Idim Okpot-Mbiekene-Nung Obong-Ikot Ntung-East West Road and the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof Eno Ibanga remarked that “Bullentine Construction Company Nigeria Limited is a community friendly company,” was not an understatement. The company has truly proven itself to be community friendly. They have not only supported community development initiative but has sponsored many programmes that have impacted immensely on the lives of the people. The renovation of Ikot Eyo Community School and building a 3-bedroom bungalow for the principal as part of its corporate social responsibility has further justified that the company is intentional about policies that uplift the people and impact positively on the society. Any of their site you visited, everyone is saying Bullentine Construction Company Nigeria Limited is a good corporate organization and it’s MD, Chief Faysal Harb is a good man.

As the company is intentional about delivering quality and time-bound services, it behooves on Akwa Ibom State Government to entrust them with more contracts and it is hope that they will continue to justify the confidence reposed on them by the State Government and Akwa Ibom people.
