In his avowed commitment to reduce the incessant child deaths and women during child births and his drive towards effective leadership.

Mkpisong Nsidibe Akata on Wednesday 21 August, 2024 during the plenary at the Assembly complex Uyo, sponsored a motion on the need to comprehensively regulate the activities of traditional birth attendants in Akwa Ibom State

The motion was seconded by Hon Selina Ukpatu, member representing, Ikot Abasi/ Eastern Obolo State Constituency.

It was brought in pursuant to order 11, (Three) rule (one) of the standing orders of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (seventh edition)

Dr Akata reiterated that maternal newborn and child health remains an important public health concern and must be treated with care.

He further enumerated that according to statistics as released by ” UNICEF”, about 40,000 women die from problems and complications arising from pregnancy and child birth.

Akata highlighted that the major causes of women and child mortality during delivery is due to lack of exposure to basic contemporary maternal training beyond what was handed to them by their parents.

Other factors that lead to high mortality include; lack of adequate pre – natal and post – natal care facilities and administration of unverified concoctions and total absence supervisors or regulatory oversights and the absence of emergency life – saving medical equipment.

Dr Akata in his submission prayed that, training and re – training of traditional birth attendants should commence immediately to afford a safer maternal health practices

He further called on the Ministry of Health to commence the registration of traditional birth attendants houses/ homes in the state in the view with regulating their practices and urged them to clamp down on illegal traditional birth attendants houses/homes.

As a matter of urgent public importance, Speaker Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Elder Udeme Otong, mandated the house committee on health to oversight on the matter to a successful conclusion.

In another breathtaking event at the plenary on Wednesday, the member representing Eket State Constituency, Dr Nsidibe Akata sponsored life touching bills which is aimed at providing financial grants to farmers and agricultural projects and further safe guard the right and privileges of citizens.

Bill for a law to provide for the establishment and composition of Akwa Ibom State Agricultural development trust fund (ADEFUND) and Bill for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State public complaints anti corruption commission and for other matters connected thereto

After due deliberations in the plenary, the bills sails through its first reading

Similarly, the House of Assembly during its plenary on Wednesday, passed a bill for a law to further amend the AKISIEC law cap 69, laws of Akwa Ibom State to allow AKISIEC determine new swearing in date for local government Chairmen.

The House in an unanimous decision passed a vote of confidence to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.
