EKET PDP VICE CHAIRMANSHIP TICKET: Rt Hon COMFORT EMMANUEL STEPS OUT, OBONGANWAN INYANG AKPAWAN STEPS IN

Ikot Abia still remains the shopping ground.

Ikot Abia village in Okon 1 ward is fast becoming a beautiful bride of Eket politics as the Afia Nsit born mercurial political whiz kid, Rt Hon  Akan Tommey has decided for the second time running to pick his running mate from the mother’s village of the sitting Eket state lawmaker, Dr Nsidibe Akata.

In the outgoing administration, Alaba as fondly called, was very comfortable, working with his loyal deputy, Rt Hon Comfort Emmanuel. We still recollect with nostalgia the powerful valedictory speech and encomium the PDP chairmanship hopeful showered on his second in command, the day he was pronounced and proclaimed as the preferred/consensus candidate at the PDP chapter secretariat.

Without mincing words, we saw emotions betrayed and it was clearly noticed that if Alaba was given the option of choosing his running mate again, he would have preferred a comforting sister that he knows and trusted than an angel that he doesn’t know. But since politics is a dynamic game and also interest driven, he has to abide by the decision of the stakeholders. To say the least, the No 2 woman took bullets for her amiable boss.

The two amazons are indeed familiar foes in the political arena. The duo had earlier locked horns in the councillorship race about a decade ago but the incumbent vice chairman who is Abian by birth took her to the cleaners, when it came to the crunch. The new running mate is Abian by marriage.

Now history beckons for the newest lady on the block, Obonganwan Inyang Akpawan to jokingly take her own pound of flesh from her arch rival many years ago when the position of Ward Councillor was wrongfully snatched away from her in very controversial circumstances. But thank God that there is no love lost again between the two gladiators as they are now comrades at arms, working harmoniously for the actualization of the project.

That is why the saying that in politics, there is no permanent friends or enemies but permanent interest , still holds sway till eternity. The synergy between both of them, at least for now, can’t be taken for granted. They are now united in one accord, sisterhood and political marriage.

Comfort came, saw and is now left for posterity to judge her account of stewardship to Eket people and Inyang now steps in to continue from where her kinswoman lets off.

The arduous task ahead of the retired principal is to either try to measure up to the required expectations or surpass the records of achievements left by her kinswoman predecessor. Analysts say the difference between the two ladies is likely going to be like six and half a dozen.
