Gov Eno Terminates Contract on Odio Road

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has revoked contract for the construction of 15.1km Ndon Eyo-Ikot Akpatek-Ikwe-Odio road, to be re-awarded to another contractor in few weeks after re-evaluation of the project.

The Governor disclosed this during a Media Briefing with Journalists at Government House, Uyo to mark his one year anniversary in office.

Responding to a question raised by a reporter with The Plenary Newspaper, Edet Edet Friday, on the state of Odio road which has since been abandoned, Governor Eno stated that he is not impressed with what is going on with that road project and has directed for the termination of the contract to be re-assigned to another contractor.

“I have directed that the road contract be terminated and we will re-award it. I am not happy that Odio does not have a road. I have terminated four roads already and re-awarded them. We have terminated the Airport-Nsit Atai-Oron Road and re-awarded it.”

He directed the State Ministry of Works to re-evaluate the contract to determine if the State Government is owing the contractor or the contractor is owing the State Government.

“This one I have said it, Hon. Commissioner, call the contractor, revalue the road let us know who is owing who, and we are prepared to discharge our obligation if we are owing them. If they are the one owing us, they will pay us our money. We will deduct it from some of the money we are owing them, but they cannot continue that road. Just give us few weeks, let’s finish the evaluation, we will put a new contractor to continue,” Governor Eno disclosed.

Speaking earlier, Commissioner for Works and Fire Services, Prof. Eno Ibanga, explained that Odio road was 21 percent completion and the contractor couldn’t continue with the project despite funding by the State Government.

Recall that Ndon Eyo-Ikot Akpatek-Ikwe-Odio road was first awarded by Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC in 2002 to Worldwide Technologies but the road was abandoned. Again, in 2017, Akwa Ibom State Government re-awarded the road to VKS Nigeria Ltd. but was again abandoned in a controversial circumstance.

With this new development, Odio people and adjoining communities in that route can heave a sigh of relief as God has finally sent a saviour in Governor Umo Eno who will deliver them from bad road that has been a clog in the wheel of progress and development of the area.
