Ibom Angels Football Club of Akwa Ibom have gained promotion to the elite division of women’s club football in the country, the Nigeria Women’s Football League – NWFL, after a dominant 2-0 victory over Osun Babes, Sunday, in the ongoing NWFL championship in Calabar, the Cross River state capital.

Angels qualified for the semi-final play-offs with the unblemished record of four wins in four Group-B1 matches against Papa Soccer Angels, Chosen Generation FC, Unification FC and Delta Babes, scoring ten goals and conceding just two to amass twelve maximum points and set up a play-off battle against Osun Babes of Osogbo who finished atop Group A2.

The Orange Girls, as they are fondly called, began the game like a house on fire, seized the early initiative and took the game straight to the opposition. They soon got the just reward that all their attacking impetus deserved when indigenous teenage sensation, Abasiofon Uwah, reached at the end of a free-kick in the tenth minute of play to head home the game’s opening goal and her second of the championship.

From then on, the Akwa Ibom ambassadors took matters into their own hands with some swashbuckling football much to the delight of the cherry crowd inside the main bowl of U. J. Esuene stadium. Victory was secured in the sixty-first minute when four-goal top scorer Ijeoma Onweagha’s thunderbolt just on the edge of the penalty area breezed into the bottom corner of the goal.

In his reaction, Akwa Ibom state Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, has described Ibom Angels’ victory and subsequent promotion to the top flight as being in tune with the ARISE agenda of Governor Umo Eno.

“By arising from the obscurity of second division football to all the glory of the first division, Ibom Angels have not only brought glory to our state and people, but have also epitomized all that the ARISE agenda represents.” Mr Uko said.

“His Excellency, the sports-loving Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Umo Eno, is proud of the achievement of the girls.” He added.

Meanwhile, Ibom Angels will be joined in the 2024/2025 NWFL by Honey Badgers of Makurdi who defeated host-city team, Pelican Stars of Calabar, 1-0 in the second semi-final play-off to secure the other promotion ticket.
