IKUCUP 2024 FINALS: ARCHIBONG PLEDGES SUPPORT TO GRASSROOTS SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, has pledged his commitment to grassroots sports development, as Idung Abasiakpan emerges winner of 2024/2025 Ikot Ibiok Unity Cup IKUCUP in a 4-2 penalty shootout against Adaha Akwok.
Archibong, while presenting the trophy to the winning team, Idung Abasiakpan with cash of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (₦500,000), on Wednesday, 1st January, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church primary school field, Ikot Ibiok, Eket LGA., urged the organizers of the tournament to maintain a standard that will enhance the nurturing of young talents.
In line with the ARISE Agenda of Gov. Umo Eno, he reiterated his commitment to advancing sports development and grooming young stars to achieve the policy directive of the Agenda’s blueprint of capacity building and professional development of Akwa Ibom sons and daughters that can compete in the global platform.
Speaking on enhancing their talents, Mkpisong Frank Archibong encouraged parents and young people to take education serious aside their passion in football and other sports, noting that, education will help to harness the finesse of their talents.
Also, the Chieftaincy Affairs Boss, alongside the Member representing Eket State constituency, Dr. Nsidibe Akata, member representing Nsit Ubium State constituency, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Bob Otobong, member representing Ikono, Rt. Hon. Asuquo Nana Udo, State secretary of the PDP, Elder banga Brownson and Executive chairman of Okobo LGA, Mr. George Henshaw, graced the finals of Okon Soccer tournament, where he expressed satisfaction over youths interest in sports development, adding that, in addition to the discovery of football talents, the tournament also aims at engaging young people meaningfully, it brings peace, unity and togetherness among the youths, as well as empowering the talented.
The tournament, sponsored by the Commissioner, also had other consolation prizes won by best overall coach, best goalkeeper and best player.
