Policeman Returns Money Mistakenly Paid Him by POS Operator
The Divisional Crime Officer, DCO at Ikot Udota Police Division in Eket local government area, Akwa Ibom State, ASP Luke Ikem, has returned money mistakenly paid him by POS operator, saying he cannot benefit from money he doesn’t deserves.
According to ASP Ikem, he went to withdraw N60,000 while returning from church on Sunday at Afaha Uqua junction in Eket LGA. After the withdrawal, the POS operator, a young lady, handed the money to him and he gave her N1000 for her charges.
Surprisingly, when he reached home, he was debited N6000 instead of N60,000. He was seriously disturbed throughout the night and decided to return the money.
When he visited the place the following day, he didn’t see the girl but saw a young man. He explained to him that he is returning the N60,000 that was mistakenly paid him, but the young man said the girl has been sacked.
“I came here on Sunday after church to withdraw N60,000. Having withdraw the money, I told the POS operator that the charges is much. I gave her N1000 and left with the N60,000. When I got back home, I saw an alert of N6000 and I am here to return the money.”
The Police Officer therefore handed the entire N60,000 including the N6000 that was debited him to new operator, pleaded for the young lady to be reinstated for the mistake.
“The money is not my own. I want to use this opportunity to tell the world that any transaction done in error and you received any money that is not your own, you suppose to return the money to the owner if you know the person. If you don’t know the person, return it to the bank. Any money that enter your account that is not your own is a transaction in error and you should return it to the owner.
“I want to use this opportunity to tell the world that not every policeman is bad. In your family, we have the good, the bad and the ugly, depending on the family you come from.
Speaking further, ASP Ikem called on Christian to embrace God and serve him willingly, maintaining that only people that have the mind of God can do what he is doing.
He said that mistake by the POS operator would have enrich him but he decided to return it because God laid it in his heart that the money is not his own.
ASP Ikem’s action has further proved that there are still good men in the Police Force. He has sent a strong message to Nigerians that honesty remain the best policy and as citizens, we should be patriotic in words and deeds.
He is a true reflection of the mantra that “Police is your friend,” and serves as a beacon of hope to the younger generation. Men like ASP Luke Ikem deserves to be honoured by the Police authority for projecting the image of the Police Force in good light.
