Not less than 188 qualified Journalists were yesterday inducted as members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Council, the induction (oath taking) was performed by Comrade (Barr) Sylvester Edet Ekpo, the Chairman of State Information Chapel.

By this induction they have become full members of the Union in right standing as their names will henceforth be captured in the NUJ Compendium both in the State and national as well.

Addressing the inductees, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk charged them to be of excellent conduct and not engage in cases that will bring shame and disrepute to the union, maintaining such inimical acts will be frowned at, and may lead to delisting of members when found guilty by the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee of the Union.

As new members of the Union I charge you not to forget what you were taught during your orientation by the Union which is to operate in line with the ethics of the profession.

The State Council has an Ethics and Disciplinary Committee so that you will not use your membership of the Union to perpetuate crime or write stories that are false with the believe that the Union will come to your rescue.

I want you to conduct yourselves in a respectful manner especially to older members of the Union and I charge you to be team players by joining us to continue with the policy of writing to build and unite our society in line with our ethical provisions which is to promote developmental journalism”.

The NUJ Chairman assured the new members of welfare packages when necessary and Union’s intervention when they are faced with challenges in which they are innocent.

In his advice the former Chairman of the Union, Comrade Ikpong Essien Udom while congratulating the new members advised them on keeping to the ethics of the journalism profession, as Journalism remains a respected profession that can grant the practitioner access to any office no matter how mighty and highly placed.

He particularly harped on the mode of dressing, stressing that no Journalists is permitted to dress shabily at any point in time.

The former Council Chairman commended the NUJ in Akwa Ibom State under the leadership of Comrade Amos Etuk for recording new strides and members on a daily basis.

“I want to urge you as you come into this profession today, plan to help in promoting Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as Journalists are largely known as human right fighters working for the society to be better”.

Responding on behalf of the inductees, Comrade Amadie Akpabio of Consolidated Chapel described the NUJ under the leadership of Comrade Amos Etuk as big, strong , and formidable.
He thanked the Union for opening its door to admit new members and pledged the inductees ‘readiness to be objective, creative and loyal to constituted authority and the regulations of the Union even as they are coming in to add more value.

The event which held at the Union Secretariat, information drive, Uyo also coincided with the August 2024 Congress of the Union

Meanwhile, recommendations and Decisions reached at Congress will be made public by the Communique Drafting Committee.
